Magazines For, About & In Iowa
Believe it of not there are 4 magazines that I have found that are exclusively about our state. And, somehow, I get 3 of them. I’m guessing I’m on someone’s “good” list because two of them come to me complimentary.
The one I pay for is Our Iowa. This is a wonderful bi-monthly glossy full of photos, stories and tidbits about Iowa. Most pages have a wonderful “side note” (which is written vertically up the side of the page) such as: Some folks have no more conscience than an cow in a stampede or People with patience put up with people they’d rather put down. There is always a stunning centerfold photo and the input comes from all over the state. In fact each county has a “Hawk-i”, a field reporter, to share the goings on in their county. It’s a wonderful magazine- I’ve given it as gifts (even to out of state friends!) and it’s been a huge hit! Another great feature is their “Lucky I” drawing. Each advertiser pays part of their ad revenue by giving away products or services to Our Iowa readers. Each magazine has 3 “lucky Is” hidden in ads. Located the Is, send in a post card and you might be a winner! How cool is that? One year (6 issues) is $12.98- and well worth it!
Another magazine I have been receiving for over a year is DSM Magazine. This magazine is for the hip, up-and-comer in Des Moines. It includes social calendars, arts, weddings and places to see and be seen. There are lots of ads- many for places that I didn’t even know Des Moines had. It’s a great magazine for seeing how Des Moines is growing and becoming a city on par with Minneapolis and Chicago. A one year (4 issue) subscription is $20.
The newest magazine to hit my mailbox is All Inspired About Des Moines. This is one deluxe magazine. The magazine is companion to the website of the same name and is to “serve as a beautifully illustrated field guide to both a rewarding life in Des Moines and as a catalyst to inspire the community itself to continued greatness”. It is beautifull illustrated. As I received the Premier Issue I don’t have much to go on so I will just say that this magazine seeks to bring you to a new understanding and awareness of Des Moines. I look forward to receiving future issues. A one year (4 issue) subscription is $18.95.
The granddaddy of all Iowa magazines is The Iowan. This is a magazine that has been celebrating Iowa for years. It celebrates the people, places and history that make Iowa, well, Iowa. A one year (6 issue) subscription is $19.95.
At least one of these magazines is sure to interest you. And all of them will remind you just how great Iowa is (because, sometimes, it is easy to forget!)
