White Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese
This dish is a twice a weeker at our house. We all love it, with the exception of my 4 year old, who doesn’t like anything so she doesn’t count.
I don’t know if she created it or not, but I inherited this recipe from
my Grandmother and it’s one of the best things she ever gave to me …
and she left with me some of the most incredible memories, so that’s saying
a lot.
It’s pretty difficult and I don’t think you’ll be able to handle making it … but if you are so inclined to try, I’ll share the recipe with you.
GRANDMA’S WHITE MACARONI AND CHEESE
- 2 – 8oz. blocks of extra sharp white cheddar cheese
- 2 cups of elbow noodles
- Milk
- Pepper
- Cooking Spray
Judging from the ingredients you can see how difficult this will be, don’t you? So pay close attention, okay?
- Boil the noodles and drain
- Cut up all the cheese into slices
- Spray casserole dish with cooking spray
- Poor enough noodles into the dish to cover the bottom
- Place cheese slices over noodles, creating an entire layer
- Add more noodles to barely cover the cheese
- More cheese
- More noodles
- What’s left of the cheese goes on top
- Pour in milk to where you just see it coming up through the noodles at the top
- Bake in 350 oven for 1 hour
- Enjoy
Many people ask me WHERE I find the white cheddar cheese that I use in this recipe. I am lucky enough to find it at my local Wal-mart, however, many can not. There is also a Market Pantry version of the white cheddar at SuperTarget. Or, you can purchase it online here.

Hey, isn’t cheddar cheese suppose to be yellow? How can it be white AND be cheddar? You’re making my head go “tilt”! Your recipe sounds oh so good but thank goodness I can’t be tempted to try it – since my oven is dead. (Yes, my lovely DD killed it by preheating the oven … not realizing there was a pizza box currently renting out that space!) No way will a 9×13 pan fit in my toaster oven!
Looking forward to more of your recipes,

I’m from IL. Not Iowa. Am I allowed to be here?
I love white cheddar and I will DEFINITELY be making this. Soon.
Cheddar cheese is naturally white, but most conventionally available cheddar has been dyed the yellow/orange that folks people are familiar with. Take a trip to your closest natural foods grocer, such as Whole Foods (I notice you’re in Texas, Karen, which is where Whole Foods is headquartered) and check out the cheese section–maybe substitute a little bit of the cheddar for some other cheeses too! =)
